The championship level orienteer and keen outdoor enthusiast Tuomas Vohlonen had long been troubled by the inaccuracy and lack of steady needle operation traditional compasses. Through the use of Tuomas’ engineering skills he was able to discover and patent the production method of a liquid filled compass, offering a superior needle steadiness for a more accurate reading.

Today, Suunto is still based in Finland where most of their products are designed and hand crafted with pride in their flagship factory outside Helsinki.
