Ski boot fitting service – how it works

Getting to know you

It’s important for us to get to know you as a skier, so we’ll start by asking you about your past experiences with ski boots, your ability level, and what kind of skiing you plan to be doing. Once we’ve had this initial discussion it’s over to the Boot Fitting Station for a Foot Analysis.

 Foot Analysis

At this stage, we’re looking at three key dimensions: forefoot width, instep height and heel and ankle width. Then we use a standard measurer to take a weighted and unweighted measurement of the foot.

For the best possible fit we recommend wearing a technical ski sock. If you don’t have your own pair with you, we can help you choose a suitable pair from our range.

Once we’ve got you in the right type of sock and we’ve chosen a boot we’ll perform a shell check, which is done without the inner lining of the boot. We’re looking at to make sure that your foot has enough space in four key areas: length, width, volume and the ankle cavity. If the boot passes the shell check it’s time to try it on with the inner lining.

Time to try

Initially the boot will feel tight on the big toe, but once it’s fastened and you’re flexing forward a lot of that pressure will go away.

All ski boots come with a flat foam insole, which doesn’t offer any support. For improved fit and performance, we recommend replacing this with either a trim to fit insole, like a Superfeet insole, or a custom-made footbed. We’ll replace the foam insole in the second boot with a trim-to-fit product so you can feel the difference for yourself.

Custom moulded footbeds

For the ultimate fit we recommend a custom-made insole, which exactly matches the contours of your foot.

To make your custom footbeds we first take a mould of your feet. We then heat the footbeds to soften them, lay them over the moulds and again ask you to stand; pressing the footbeds down into the contours of the mould. After a couple of minutes, the footbeds harden and we have your perfect custom insole.

All that’s left to do then is add a stabiliser to stop the round heel from rolling inside the boot and the arch from squashing and losing its shape, and trim off any extra material.

Customising your boot

For some customers, this might be the end of the process. But we’re looking for you to tell us if there are any specific areas of discomfort where we could further customise the fit of your boot.

To do this we have a number of nifty tricks up our sleeve: we can oven heat the shell to generate more volume; heat the inner lines to soften the foam, allowing it to compress more quickly; stretch specific parts of the shell to alleviate pressure points; replace sections of the material in the liner to generate more volume; and we can even grind away plastic from inside of the shell.

As you can see there’s a lot involved in fitting you with your perfect pair of ski boots, so please allow for the process to take up to two hours. And remember, if you’re experiencing issues with your boots after 14 days of use, you can bring them back to us to take advantage of our Comfort Guarantee.
